Sure could’ve fooled you guys though, huh? We’ve been through a bit of a period in real life where writing about games and games and games got to be a bit extraneous, but of course, Gaben brings gaming back to the forefront with the Steam Summer Sale! Of course, I’ve sacrificed my wallet to the Steam Gods, and here’s how (with a little opinion on each one):
A favorite from when my brother and I used to play this game all the time when we were younger. Hasn’t aged THAT well, but fun nonetheless. More of a nostalgia pick at this point with AoE III on the market.
Verdict: Recommended if you like old RTS games.
Saw this game before, thought it looked interesting, but not at full price. Picked it up on Day 1…this is a REALLY good simulation of government. Literally no one likes you, especially if you try doing the right thing. Getting assassinated is pretty common, but the game really offers you some interesting thought processes.
Verdict: Recommended if you’re a masochist.
I’ve only played a couple hours (and frankly haven’t gotten that far into it, because I suck at games), but to me, this game feels like what the survival aspect of Minecraft always aspired to be. There is a palpable feeling of dread as the darkness comes on, and honestly it took some effort to peel myself away from this game long enough to write this article.
Verdict: Recommended.
Dynasty Warriors 8: Extreme Legends
I will freely admit that this game is a guilty pleasure. It’s a bit awkward on PC, but it’s a hack-and-slash game with giant weapons, mythical heroes, and lots of ass-kicking. Is it the deepest game? No, not by a long shot. But killing every soldier in sight with a couple button presses never gets old for me.
Verdict: Recommended if you just want a mindless hack-n-slasher.
I’m gonna be 100% honest here: I don’t get this game. I don’t understand why it’s fun. Quite frankly, it was a waste of money for me. Feel free to tell me how stupid I am (and why!) in the comments.
Verdict: Not recommended.
Surprisingly fun! I picked this up when it went on a daily deal, and expected to maybe get an hour or two out of it, but this is a game that you can keep playing for a while. Naming the games is half the fun (I crushed the market with Space Sluts II), but managing your team and a balance of earnings and research really gives this game some surprising depth.
Verdict: Recommended.
Not saying it’s a bad game, because I can see where people would find it fun. For me though, the game was a bit too realistic: it’s damn tedious. I don’t really play games to feel like I’m at work.
Verdict: Recommended only if you’ve never had a job and need to know what paperwork is like.
Love it. Tactical strategy-RPG with space stuff instead of fantasy elements? I’m there. The only thing that sucks about the game is its potential for turning everything to shit REALLY quick when the aliens spawn on an unsuspecting soldier.
Verdict: Highly recommended.
I’ll be checking back in periodically throughout the summer sale with more thoughts on games.
GG!
