The two titans of MOBAs are always compared against each other, but is that really fair? The casual aspect of Leagues is loved by many. On the other hand, the skill curve in DotA 2 is a strong aspect of the game. Can you compare the two if they are vastly different, even though they may seem the same?
League of Legends is one of the largest, if not the largest, free to play games out there. With pro teams popping up all over the world, the fan base doesn’t seem to be slowing down at all. The game has you select a champion and build items that increase the champion’s damage or ability to help the team. There are many team compositions that you can create, making each game a different experience.
Although DotA 2 has fewer fans than Leagues, it’s gaining recognition worldwide. The game has you select a hero with one of three stats: strength, agility, or intelligence. A majority of the items you build have the one or more of the three stats along with a use effect. Building your hero around use effect items, items that give you stat boosts, or on-hit effect items is a must. The wide variety of items and how you use them on champions can show off player’s creativity in crazy builds that work.
The two games are very different in may ways. League of Legends is made more for the casual gamer. It’s very forgiving, when you die, you just die… you get a spawn timer and that’s it. In DotA 2 not only do you die, but you lose some of your gold. This makes it hard to be able to come back after dying just a few times. Builds in DotA 2 tend to have different items depending on situations like who you’re facing and how much farm you are actually getting. Leagues, on the other hand, has a pretty standard build for each role. As much as they want to think you have multiple build options, only one or two of them are considered to be good for each role.
League of Legends and DotA 2 are considered to be the best two MOBAs out there right now. The two games play out so differently and although they both have a top, bottom, and middle lane they just don’t seem the same. Leagues has the roles support, jungle, top, AD carry, and mid. DotA 2 has similar roles, but they don’t do the same things. A support in Leagues will stack items that support the team, while a support in DotA 2 might not get any items, they will concentrate on getting wards and dust. There can be a second support in DotA 2, this hero will get the items that support the team. A carry in Leagues has to be a ranged attack damage champion, while in DotA 2 the role of a carry can pretty much be filled by anyone. Maybe the fact that they are both considered MOBAs means they can be compared with one another. Does that mean one is better than the other? Let the fans decide that one.
GG!
